Design sprint snapshots and reflections

Image
On Friday 14th October, we held a Design Sprint at Te Kura Tuatahi o Wēteri - Wesley Primary school. The purpose of the event was to define our learning space challenges for stage 2 of our new school buildings and to ideate some solutions collaboratively with staff, community and business partners.  It was amazingly led by our AP- Andy Crowe and supported by our key note speakers Terry White and @Bhavini Pandya from @PlanningLearningSpaces (PLS), our leadership team DP Shelley, TLs Sam and Heidi, with lovely Kai provided by Madie! I want to thank all of our beautiful staff for giving up time during your break too.   Alongside our staff, we had Ministry of Education Delivery manager Fiona, our wonderful architects @MOSHIN MUSSA and Will from RTA and our strategic build partners like Liam Doolin and Alex Hall from Naylor Love.  Representatives from the business sector and our community leaders gave powerful feedback to each working group and we had a few laughs along the way too. a huge

Matariki 2022

Image
VINAKA! KA PAI! NGĀ MIHI NUI to both Wesley Primary and Wesley Intermediate students and staff for coming together to  celebrate Matariki with our collective Hapori. Our kids showed their whānau and our wider community their amazing talents and passion for matariki this term. What a pleasure it was to host WIS and our manuhiri to celebrate a special Matariki together. I have a feeling this tradition will continue as it supports our collaboration across our two kura. We both have supportive board chairs Vaughan and Sione that encouraged us to make our matariki celebration possible.  Secondly thankyou to the ICEBREAKER team led by Scott in preparing the kai, alongside Suchi, Ps Peter and Tili Leilua, Matua Hemi, Mr Pope and our volunteer parents as the hangi was incredible. Matua Jo, GTT Team, Whaea Max, Whaea Ocea and the cultural team have set up authentic kaupapa māori initiatives each year and took it to another level with supportive st

PLS Blog - Wēteri reflections

Image
Recently we were asked to share about our PLS journey via the PLS Blog so we were delighted to co-author a reflection to share about our journey so far. Firstly though nga mihi nui - to Shelley for your insight and support of the PLS PLD and  to Sam for your leadership as our PLSiP coach, which has been outstanding. Lastly to the Wēteri Team leaders Sam, Cath and Heidi for taking time with our staff to wānanga. We have grown deeper in our understanding - mātauranga pertaining to what we do at Wēteri and also how we could build on this for our new kura.  I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing kaiako and kaiawhina share their kura huna about our kaupapa and as Shelley states "the teachers are now planning and working in a totally collaborative way"  which I couldn't agree more. I think it's amazing to see this all happening even as we are not in an ILE space yet! I have loved the passion from kaiako to try out new things like working across single cells and some have undertak

Please see our photos and If possible can you highlight the success of giving our food parcels as a thankyou to whānau getting vaccinated rather than a incentive. Alot of businesses and organizations supported the cause fim including Kidscan, New World Mt Roskill and McDonald's Mt Roskill, Santi Niwas Trust, Whodidyouhelptoday? TRUST, Wesley Primary and Intermediate School. FIRSTLY thankyou to our volunteers as we reached 265 vaccines given because of the mahi of  45 plus volunteers and so many people working from home and off site to support our SHOTFAMZ event so a huge thankyou for what you achieved.  After the event I felt so humbled and tired but also sto

Planning for PLS Workshop 4 and coaching the coach session

Image
September-October 2021  Planning session with SLT with Terry and Bhavini for workshop 4.  One of the key aspects of workshop 4, is being able to articulate what the Next Practice actually looks like, we are really pleased with the progress that our teams are making in reflecting and ideating. The process for linking a picture to the statement is a critical step in ideating and prototyping for our new build.  As we go through each of the themes we are already seeing the links to the other areas of the themes.  We could see in the sharing from Bhavini and Terry that learners feeling empowered and have agency in their learning journey at Trumpington park school. We are moving towards a strategy for change for our kura, where we can be creative and zone our environments very dynamically.  Workshop 5 is about zoning our spaces and as we move into a more detailed understanding of what we want the furniture and the space to be utilized. Heidi suggested that "this process helps us to go

Reviewing workshops so far

Image
Reviewing workshops with Terry and Doug - 16 September 2021 Terry suggested that he is an observer and supports the teachers and will link into working with teachers and helping provide case study material. Doug will be working with the teams on an as-needed basis and we will not be charged. However, Doug would also like to work with our team on Zoning with our staff and put into practical models for how the learning could be structured.  I also suggested that we can look at the Zoning working in relationship with our 3D virtual reality Pepeha game that we are developing. Doug's work with us would fit well with this  The objective for Workshop 4 is that we have identified what our next practice looks, eg students are more engaged = what does this look like and therefore we have a clear definition of this linked to the bank of pictures. The picture shows a learning activity, doing things around learning based on the shape, learning structure, organizing of learning, and also dynami
